Brussels north-south link

The challenges

With thousands of passengers every day, Brussels Central station is of huge importance to mobility within Brussels and, by extension, to all rail traffic. It is also the most important station in the underground north-south link between the Brussels Midi/Zuid and Brussels Nord/Noord stations. As part of an upgrade, a new ventilation system was installed to limit the effects of any fire developing in the stations or in the tunnel. The limits of the design were very restrictive given that the tunnel was already in place could not be taken out of service.

A qualitative risk analysis demonstrated which measures were appropriate. The fire strategy was determined in consultation with the client. A combination of 1D and 3D analyses for both smoke propagation and evacuation was used to produce a preliminary design to map out the functional requirements. These formed the contractual framework for the ventilation system to be installed.
