The market leader in fire protection engineering in Belgium, FESG specializes in code compliance, risk assessment, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), evacuation analysis and performance-based design in complex commercial, infrastructure, transportation and tunnel projects.

FESG provides explanation on Stavanger car park fire
Stavanger airport car park fire The fire that occured on 7/01/2020 in the airport car park in Stavanger is raising a lot of questions. What do we know? The fire is reported to have started in an Opel (diesel) on the ground floor. The fire quickly spread to multiple cars. Parts of the building have collapsed due to the high temperatures. At least 300 vehicles are said to have been destroyed. The fire brigade had to contain the fire from the outside, as the possibilities for internal firefighting were limited due to the quick fire spread and low structural stability (15 minutes). BIM based approach addressing evacuation in fire
Complex building designs, new construction materials and ever-changing building lay-outs all stress the difficulty to properly address evacuation in modern buildings. Even though the number of fire deaths/ injuries show a great decline compared to 19s, the rate has reduced from around 50% to 10%. One of the reasons is known to be lack of adapting safety measures based on the risk in complex buildings. FESG is starting a comprehensive research program to set forward a methodology that will check the safety level of the building using real time evacuation data and simulation results of how fire and smoke would spread throughout the building. FESG colleague Bart receives PhD!
On Friday the 28th of June, a jury of professors, decided unanimously that the title of Doctor in Fire Safety Engineering (UGent) should be awarded to FESG-colleague Bart Van Weyenberge. For 5 years, Bart worked in close collaboration with FESG on his PhD in which he discusses the development of a probabilistic risk based model to quantify the life safety level in buildings in case of fire.
