Large scale fire tests on sprinklered cars in underground car park
Why now? Fire Safety regulations in underground car parks are changing. Since 1st of january a new guideline (soon becoming federal regulation) is being applied both in Flanders and Brussels. The new guideline is much stricter but allows more choices. In many cases the choice between smoke control and sprinkler is possible. From certain parking surfaces, both systems are mandatory. What is the goal of the research project? A fire brigade intervention model is being developed by FESG, allowing to determine for each car park what is the most suitable combination of fire safety measures. This can range from smoke extraction, sprinkler, compartmentation or combinations of these, but also to "light" solutions such as a sprinkler connected to the water main or smoke extraction using mobile fans. What is the…Read more
FESG presents probabilistic model the International Tunnel Safety and Ventilation conference in Graz
From the 12th to the 14th of June, the 9th edition of the International Tunnel Safety and Ventilation conference was held in Graz, Austria. There, FESG presented a paper describing its probabilistic model for assessing the performance of longitudinal ventilation systems. Tunnels are usually equipped with longitudinal ventilation systems in order to keep the area in front of the fire free of smoke. This is achieved by inducing a flow along the tunnel that confines the smoke downstream the fire according to the direction of the traffic. In order to dimension such a system, the designer has to choose a number of variables such as the position of the fire, the size of the fire, the distribution of the traffic, etc. This choice can either be based on demands imposed by local regulations or the designer’s experience. Several possible…Read more
FESG wins 2017 FireForum Award
FESG has won the prestigious FireForum Award in the category for architects and consultancies. The fire safety design for the redevelopment of the “Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk” in Poelkapelle (West-Flanders) was the best in a whole series of projects. The project was part of a renovation of the church intended for out-of-school day-care, offices for “Kind & Gezin”, a reception area for the municipal staff and a liturgical room. The day-care centre was designed as a “box-in-a-box” concept. The design focussed on an open architecture giving special attention to the implementation of an open staircase and the use of the existing materials. The open staircase, serving as main staircase for the building, connects the different levels of the building creating an atrium in one large compartment. The application of…Read more
