When it came upgrading the ventilation system in the Craeybeckx Tunnel, I considered ease of maintenance and life cycle costs to be important factors. FESG presents probabilistic model the International Tunnel Safety and Ventilation conference in Graz
From the 12th to the 14th of June, the 9th edition of the International Tunnel Safety and Ventilation conference was held in Graz, Austria. There, FESG presented a paper describing its probabilistic model for assessing the performance of longitudinal ventilation systems. Tunnels are usually equipped with longitudinal ventilation systems in order to keep the area in front of the fire free of smoke. This is achieved by inducing a flow along the tunnel that confines the smoke downstream the fire according to the direction of the traffic. In order to dimension such a system, the designer has to choose a number of variables such as the position of the fire, the size of the fire, the distribution of the traffic, etc. This choice can either be based on demands imposed by local regulations or the designer’s experience.
